Yuki Hirano’s Special Prize: Debut at the Lucerne Festival
For young violinist Yuki Hirano, the invitation to perform at the Lukaskirche on 25 August marked more than another concert appearance. As a finalist of Classic Violin Olympus 2025, Hirano received the performance as a special prize from Christiane Weber, offering her the opportunity to present her artistry in a demanding recital alongside pianist Chizu Miyamoto.
The midday concert brought together works spanning different musical worlds and generations. Hirano opened with the Violin Sonata in B minor by Alexey Shor and Mikhail Pletnev, based on Shor’s Fourth Violin Concerto. The programme then moved to the expressive intensity of Karol Szymanowski’s Violin Sonata in D minor, Op. 9, followed by Antonín Dvořák’s Romantic Pieces, Op. 75. The recital concluded with the virtuoso Caprice d'après l'Étude en forme de Valse, Op. 52 No. 6, by Camille Saint-Saëns in the arrangement by Eugène Ysaÿe. The programme was an ambitious choice for a young artist. It demanded not only technical command, but also the ability to move convincingly between contrasting musical languages: the contemporary sound world of Shor, the rich harmonic vocabulary of Szymanowski, Dvořák’s lyrical Romanticism, and the dazzling virtuosity associated with Ysaÿe.
Together, Hirano and Miyamoto brought a programme of substantial scope to the Lukaskirche. The invitation from Christiane Weber is also a meaningful continuation of the recognition Hirano received at Classic Violin Olympus 2025. As a finalist, she had already distinguished herself among a highly competitive field of young violinists. The special prize transformed that achievement into a concrete artistic opportunity: a professional stage, a demanding programme, and the experience of sharing music with an audience.
With its combination of virtuosity, lyricism and modern repertoire, the concert offered an impressive portrait of an artist at the beginning of his professional journey. Yuki Hirano’s appearance was not simply a prize received after a competition; it was a new opportunity to turn recognition into music.
